{ the great stampede of 2014 }

What a great weekend at the IHSA State Basketball Tournament!
We couldn't be prouder to be a part of this district.
NOT because we have a great basketball team this year (which we do).
But because this weekend showed us very clearly what a WONDERFUL community exists here.
The excitement and support that permeated this whole weekend was unbelievable.

It's easy to be great fans when your team is winning.
It's a little bit harder to be great fans when your team is down in what seems to be a very unfair situation.
But I saw great sportsmanship, great support for our kids, and the weekend ended in a very happy celebration of a third place trophy.

I'm tempted to write about the David/Goliath match up that happened in the quarterfinal game, but I think it's best that any commentary on that situation be left to the sportswriters.  It was out of our control, and even though I greatly detest this phrase, I think it sums it up:  "It is what it is".
Besides, without that challenge to face, the Mendon Unity players of tomorrow wouldn't have the legend of Alex Blickhan dunking over two 7 foot Sudanese players to inspire them.

Saturday's game was much more our style.
The Mustangs handled Sesser-Valier with ease and came away with a 16 point victory.
The game was not even as close as the score indicates.
What an amazing feeling for these kids to end their season (and for several, their careers) with a WIN!

On Sunday, the community gathered at the school gym to show appreciation to the team and coaches for a job well done.  There was hardly a seat to be found in the bleachers, more fans lined the walls, and a huge group of kids sat together on the floor.  It was packed!!!

Even though we've only been a part of this district for less than a year, it was just SO COOL to see all the former players, parents, grandparents, and tons of little kids who were all on their feet for the Mustangs.  It truly was about so much more than basketball.
It was about COMMUNITY, and Unity has one of the best.
On this St. Patrick's Day, I don't really think we're so much lucky as we are blessed.

And to close,  my favorite.
